Hands-On Curriculum Incorporates Tennessee Educational Standards
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is a project for all grade levels in which students raise trout from eggs—eventually releasing the fish in Tennessee streams.
The process incorporates many of Tennessee’s educational standards, and “is perfectly suited for use in STEM, Biology and Ecology classes and outdoor-related club activities,” says Mike Givney, TIC coordinator for the Tennessee Council of Trout Unlimited (TU).
The state council provides classrooms with equipment, test kits, trout eggs, feed and additives for each aquarium tank, free of charge through their local TU chapter. Schools supply the aquarium tank, an aquarium stand and five-gallon buckets for water. Local TU chapter volunteers will help teachers set up the tanks and demonstrate how to care for them.
